The American History of Jeans
The American blue jeans have been in existence since the late 1870’s when a partnership between two American businessmen, Levi Strauss and J W Davis, developed a pant made of sturdy cotton denim. This pant was made stronger by the addition of metal rivets to some of the seams. These two men patented the process and began selling the denim jeans as a work clothes item.
As sales grew and time passed, younger people began wearing the denim jeans for a fashion trend statement. Jeans popularity was enhanced by both the music and film industries in the 1950’s. The popularity of jeans in western movies was evident.
Culture of the 1960’s and 1970’s caused a trend toward jeans with stylish personalized designs. Flowers or other designs were embroidered on them usually near the leg opening.
Jeans in the 1980’s and 1990’s had more fashion changes. Famous designers added their flare to the designs with additional fabrics and styles. Large department stores had a full section of designer jeans.
Today jeans are worn around the world and they continue to be one of the most popular garments.
How to Select the Jeans That Work Best for You
The fit of jeans is very important to most people. There are several basic styles available.
•The regular fit sometimes called the classic is a traditional slightly loose fit in the thighs and hips. This style usually has a straight leg to the opening.
•The relaxed fit is also known as an easy fit. These jeans may have a lower waist or a regular fit at the waist line. There is more room in the hips and thighs. They are made for comfort and the leg is generally straight to the opening.
•The tight fit known sometimes as slim jeans fit closely through the hips and thighs and have either a straight leg opening or a slightly tapered leg.
Of course, there are additional style variations created by various manufacturers, some of which include super low at the waist jeans, wide legs, boot cut and more.
Jeans come in many varieties of denim colors too. Favorites are cranberry, hunter green or brown. Tinted jeans that look as though the dye was diluted are popular in colors such as red, brown, gray or turquoise.
It is important to read jeans labels to determine if the fabric has been pre-shrunk. A pair of jeans that fits perfectly in the store may become too tight if the fabric shrinks in the dryer.
Jeans are a fun outfit for everyone in the family and most jeans will last a long time.
